Notes on the Ku written out by Tawadi in DeviantArt for me on some concept drawings she'd done years ago. Need to rewrite/add/take away details but including them here so I have them when I get back to this page.
The ku is a four legged reptile used in many of the same ways as earths horses. They have flat heads, small eyes, big teeth, and relatively long necks. Their chest cavity blends perfectly with the hips, so they dont have the distinct barrel chest of earth horses. Their forelimbs have three clawed toes, with the innermost one having a long raptor like claw. The hind feet have two toes that end in long pointed hooves. Their tail is long, easily longer than the body, and packed tight with strong muscles. The last fifth or so of the tail has no bones -giving it a limp appearance - and they can snap it similar to a whip. Despite having no bones to break, this isnt a pleasant feeling for the ku or the victim, so the "snap" is generally used only in defense. They wont hesitate to smack an enemy with their tail though; being hit by the thick muscular appendage has been described as being hit by a bamboo switch a foot thick.
Colors range from grays to browns. They may include patterning but it is generally light and unimpressive; they are bred for their specific roles, not beauty contests. Eyes come in every shade of yellow, including (rarely) shades of yellow green and yellow orange. Claws and hooves are simply a darker shade of whatever skin color is around them, from dark gray to dark brown. Average sizes of the two breeds shown compared to an "average" (6ft) human.
The 'var is a breed used mostly for racing. They are mean, but somewhat more intelligent than others breeds, and they use their lightening reflexes and cunning to disable other ku by means of biting, kicking, or whipping. They are bred to be hot and competitive, not to mention fast. They are also taught from the start to win by any means possible, and dont have much of a life off the track because of this aggression. They have a small, light build, with long legs and long necks, built primarily for speed.
The 'von is a much bigger breed used mostly for cart pulling, field plowing and just about any other gruntwork you can imagine. They were bred for their size and strength, and not so much for their intelligence. They are short tempered and stupid, and big enough to make you care when they're upset. Despite being ornery, they're good at what they do, and their stubbornness is part of what makes them good workers. Point one in a direction and it'll go all day, and damned be anyone or anything that gets in the way.
Inside the worlds of work and competition, crossbreeding is frowned upon. Each breed had been selectively bred for generations to make beasts good at what they do. Outside those realms, however, is a very different story. People looking for a good riding animal can't handle the quick, competitive nature of the var, but dont want to sit on the rotund back of a von all day either, and have begun crossing the two to make medium sized animals that can go all day without hurting the riders knees (or biting off his head). With the strength and plodding mind of the von, and the speed and wit of the var, these ku'vin are riding animals that are big and strong enough to comfortably carry any rider, but quick and smart enough to get around quickly without running people over.
